Is blurring text enough before sharing?

Do not rely on blur or pixelation to hide sensitive text. Prefer a fully opaque mask that replaces the covered pixels in the exported image.

Why unreadable is not the same as removed

Blur and pixelation transform an image while retaining patterns from the original text. Recovery can be possible in some conditions; it is not guaranteed for every image. Bishop Fox has demonstrated reconstruction of pixelated text with Unredacter and documented a blurred-text challenge.

A better screenshot workflow

1. Use the original screenshot when available so you can see every private field.
2. Cover the entire sensitive area with a solid, fully opaque rectangle. Avoid translucent highlighters and thin scribbles.
3. Include character edges and any duplicate text elsewhere in the image.
4. Export a new image and inspect the actual downloaded file.

If you only have a blurred copy, cover the whole blurred region manually. Text checks may not recognize it.

What a mask cannot do

It cannot retract a copy already shared. Uncovered context may still identify someone, so review the rest of the image too. A rectangle added to an editable document may remain a separate object: see the PDF redaction guide.
