What to hide in a bank-statement screenshot

A statement contains more than proof of one payment. It can reveal your balance, income sources, spending habits and relationships. Decide whether a receipt or a smaller excerpt will answer the question first.

Check what the recipient requires

A lender, landlord or other institution may require a complete statement or specific visible fields. Ask what redactions they accept and how to send the document securely. Keep your original unchanged for your records. A screenshot may not meet their requirements.

Review the header and footer

• Account-holder names, mailing addresses and contact details.
• Full or partial account numbers, customer IDs and routing information.
• Statement references, document IDs, barcodes and QR codes.
• Repeated identifying headers on every page or captured section.

Review the transaction history

Merchant names, transfers, salary deposits and memo fields can disclose personal information even after the account number is hidden. Cover whole unrelated rows rather than just one cell. Include dates, descriptions, amounts and running balances where they are not needed.

For a fictional duplicate-charge question in a public forum, show only the relevant charge descriptions and amounts if needed. Hide unrelated transactions, the account header and the running balance. For an actual dispute, follow the bank’s instructions through its verified channel.

Check all the copies

1. If you have several screenshot excerpts, review each one independently.
2. Check whether another row or total reveals information you intended to hide.
3. Inspect every exported PNG at readable size, including the final line and page edges.
4. Confirm that you attach only the intended redacted files.
